Three More Timber Products Facilities Gain FSC Certification
Yreka, Spectrum and White City mills granted Chain of Custody
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Adding to its lineup of third-party authorized mills, Timber Products Company announced today that three more of its manufacturing facilities have been Chain of Custody certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
The mills – Yreka, Calif. (softwood veneer), White City, Ore. (softwood plywood) and the Spectrum Division in White City (decorative laminate) – earned FSC Mixed Sources Chain of Custody certification and brings Timber Products’ total number of FSC qualified sites to five. The company’s Grants Pass, Ore., and Corinth, Miss., hardwood plywood mills joined the FSC roster in 2007. Overall, Timber Products has nine manufacturing facilities across the U.S.
“Last year Timber Products made a commitment to seek certification for several of our manufacturing mills under the FSC program as well as SFI, and we are moving quickly in that direction,” said Timber Products Vice President Roger Rutan. “The market for environmentally-friendly products is only going to grow and we feel dual affiliations separates us from the competition and truly shows our dedication to providing a wide variety of wood products that come from sustainably managed forests.”
Currently, the company’s hardwood lumber facility in Munising, Mich., is in the process of undergoing FSC Chain of Custody certification.
FSC Mixed Sources Chain of Custody certification means Timber Products can manufacture its plywood panels using FSC-sourced wood, and then sell those panels under the organization’s authorization stamp. The Timber Products facilities are among just a handful of sites in the United States that are authorized to manufacture products recognized by both FSC Mixed Source and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
Environmental Leadership
The FSC achievement is the latest third-party designation
earned by Timber Products. Last year, the company’s
Medford, Ore., particleboard plant achieved Environmentally
Preferable Product (EPP) status from the Composite Panel
Association as well as recognition by the Kitchen Cabinet
Manufacturers Association’s (KCMA) Environmental
Stewardship Program (ESP). The company announced in late
September 2008 that its hardwood plywood and particleboard
mills in Medford have been certified to meet the California Air
Resources Board (CARB) requirements.
Timber Products Company is the proud steward of 118,000 acres of forestland managed under the strict standards of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative program and was the first hardwood plywood manufacturer in the world to carry the SFI label. All materials sourced from the company’s land are audited and certified as environmentally sustainable, ensuring healthy forests for future generations.
