5 Smart Strategies for Tempering Stress in Sales

Feeling stressed impacts your productivity and can have a negative effect on relationships with customers and co-workers. Below are five easy-to-implement ideas to help salespeople cope with stress.

Establish a goal for each call or email

Setting a goal allows you to save time and increase productivity. A goal can be connecting with a decision maker, scheduling a meeting, or closing a deal. Establishing a clear objective also helps you anticipate any questions and prepare accordingly.

Make an Effective To-Do List

To-do lists can be useful, but they can also be overwhelming. Experts recommend keeping a daily to-do list of three to five activities that will have the most impact. Fewer items allow for a sense of accomplishment, and a greater ability to focus. Maintain a separate list of long and medium-term tasks to fill your daily to-dos.

Don’t Neglect New Business Development

Keeping current clients happy and persuading them to buy deeper into the product line can be a full-time job in and of itself. But it’s equally important to maintain a pipeline of new business opportunities. Allocate an hour or two each week to follow up on prospects, your future self will thank you.

Schedule Time for Stress-reduction

The human brain isn’t designed for hours of constant focus. Periodic breaks throughout the day can help you be more productive and reduce stress.

  • Twice per day, spend 15 minutes meditating, listening to music, or talking to a friend. Studies have shown a short break can increase your productivity and ability to handle complex tasks by 13 percent.     
  • Make healthy food choices. A sugary breakfast inevitably means a sugar crash; caffeine causes similar ups and downs. Limit yourself to three cups of coffee or one soda per day, and choose healthy, whole foods to give you sustained energy.
  • Make time to exercise, even if it’s just taking a walk with a client or co-worker.

Don’t Let Stress Control Your Day

Working in sales can be frustrating. A deal falls through, a product goes on backorder, or you get bad news from a customer. In times like these, stress can redline.

When this happens, take a breath and remember that bad times can’t last forever. Ask yourself, “Will this matter a year from now?” Treat mistakes as learning opportunities and don’t dwell on negative events from the past.
