It Helps to Be Partners—Rugby ABP

At Timber Products Company, we’re lucky enough to work with some of the best distributors in the business. One of those distributors is Rugby Architectural Building Products. Rugby ABP, which is part of Hardwoods Distribution Inc., works with residential and commercial custom cabinetmakers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We supply Rugby ABP with the hardwood plywood they need to meet their customer demand.

We recently connected with Tommy Heard, Regional Manager, to talk about the partnership between Timber Products and Rugby ABP.

“We’ve been a partner with Timber Products since long before I got here,” says Heard, who’s held his Regional Manager title for the past six years. “When we look for a manufacturing partner, we look for a large, professional group like Timber Products to support us with top quality products and to support our sales and marketing efforts.”

According to Heard, one of the major benefits of working with Timber Products Company is the shared commitment to customer service between the two companies.

“One of our core beliefs… we want to be the #1 supplier to our customer and… the #1 customer to our supplier,” says Heard. “The partnership works both ways. Timber Products seems to have the same value in the way they do business.”

Rugby ABP also appreciates the drop-everything-and-get-it-done attitude they experience with Timber Products. “In our market today, everything is about speed,” says Heard. “How fast can you get here? How fast can you do that? So we’re constantly being challenged to be nimble and better than our competition. Therefore, when we look for a partner, we look for the same things in them.”

Heard also spoke about Rugby’s many visits to our lumber mill, where the Rugby team got a behind-the-scenes look at all of our capabilities, including hardwood lumberhardwood plywoodprefinished plywood, softwood plywood and architectural plywood.

“Timber Products has had several of the Rugby team through the mill tours to show them all the capabilities, from the forest to the trucking side,” says Heard. “It’s a very impressive tour and it’s nice to see what resources they have available to help us go to market.”

In the end, what really puts us here at Timber Products a step ahead of other manufacturers is the quality of the team.

“To me, it comes down to people and ease of doing business,” says Heard. “We can buy plywood from any number of manufacturers, but if we run into a problem or we need a quick response, they’ve always been there for us. I can’t say that for some of the other vendors we’ve purchased from.”
